16.12.2022 Truck and stationary cranes

Metsäenergia Meter uses Kesla’s timber cranes in the production of Finnish bioenergy

Metsäenergia Meter Oy is a family-owned business in Kerimäki, which produces fuel chips for its customers’ needs in the eastern Savonia region. The increasing importance of self-sufficiency has increased the demand for bioenergy, to which Metsäenergia Meter has responded with a Finnish-made quality product in the form of fuel chips. The production of fuel chips is a taxing process that involves many phases, but the company has managed to streamline it thanks to its first-rate machinery.

“Bioenergy is being used in Finland more and more – especially now, it is on a notable upward trend. We need many kinds of machines to manufacture fuel chips. For transporting and processing timber, we use Kesla’s timber cranes. Currently, we are actively using Kesla’s legendary 1200T model, which has proved to be very robust and boasts an excellent reach,” says the company’s Managing Director Mikko Hämäläinen.

High-quality machines ensure swift chip production

Metsäenergia Meter produces high-quality Finnish-made fuel chips for its customers, ensuring that heating plants operate safely and reliably. The chip production process has been made as straightforward as possible in that the raw material for heat production is transported to the end customer in one go. This retains the quality of the product and provides users with a high energy value.

Timber is first harvested from the forest and placed along a road. Then, the fuel chip production is handled on site with a roadside chipper so that the product can be delivered directly to the customer for combustion. We have the Kesla crane mounted on a Volvo vehicle to feed timber into a Bruks chipper. This combination has proved to be extremely efficient because the Kesla crane’s electrical control is very precise and the reach is excellent. This enables us to feed logs into the chipper very quickly,” Mikko describes.

Finnish service providers are easy to trust

Metsäenergia Meter, which already has 40 years of experience in the field, employs 10 people and works with a variety of important partners in procuring and harvesting energy wood. The daily operations require the company’s own machines as well as those of its partners to ensure an efficient production process. Hämäläinen trusts Finnish-made machines, which are very reliable and come with excellent spare parts services.

When the previous chipper reached the end of its life span, it was clear to us that we would continue with a combination of a Brusk chipper and Kesla timber crane. Kesla’s machines are durable, in addition to which the company provides us with advice and maintenance services when needed. The best part of the Kesla timber crane is absolutely the spacious cabin, which is warm in winter and cool in summer. I can absolutely recommend Kesla because it is easy and pleasant to work with,” Mikko says.
